The 28-year-old Aaron Wan-Bissaka left West Ham on a season-long loan in August, with Villa holding a conditional obligation to buy if agreed appearance and starting targets are reached. Claret & Hugh reported a £3 million loan fee and suggested the permanent payment could add £18 million, taking the package to £21 million. Other reports have placed the value between £20 million and £23 million.
Wan-Bissaka spent two seasons at West Ham after joining from Manchester United for around £15 million in 2024. He made 65 appearances during his first season at the club. Last season, he featured 25 times as the Hammers finished 18th and dropped into the Championship.
That change mattered. Championship clubs now operate within the EFL’s new Squad Cost Rules, which limit player and manager costs to 85% of allowable income. Player wages form part of those costs, while net transfer income can increase the permitted figure. Moving a senior Premier League earner away from the wage bill gave West Ham more room to reshape the squad.
Villa initially wanted a straight loan, but West Ham reportedly preferred a permanent sale after relegation. The final structure gave both sides protection. Villa gained a Premier League full-back without committing the entire fee immediately, while West Ham secured £3 million upfront and retained a route to a larger payment.
Wan-Bissaka had been linked with a reluctance to return to the Championship, although that claim came from reports rather than a direct public statement. His return to the Premier League therefore solved a sporting issue as well as a financial one.
At Villa, he competes with Matty Cash and has collected minutes in the Premier League and Champions League. His appearances matter because the reported £18 million payment depends on contractual thresholds.
West Ham can benefit if Emery gives the defender enough starts to trigger the clause. In his final West Ham season, Wan-Bissaka recorded 40 interceptions and won 23 of 33 tackles.
