Virgil van Dijk’s future at Liverpool is beginning to attract attention beyond Anfield, with Juventus reportedly making checks on the captain ahead of what could become an important decision next summer.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport , Juventus sent a representative to Amsterdam to watch Van Dijk during the Netherlands’ 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany. It appears to be an early stage of their assessment rather than evidence of advanced negotiations, although the interest is significant given his contractual position.

Van Dijk’s Liverpool deal expires in the summer of 2027, meaning the coming months will inevitably bring greater scrutiny unless fresh terms are agreed.

Van Dijk signed his current two-year contract in April 2025 and Liverpool have yet to offer another extension. The defender will turn 36 before the beginning of the 2027-28 campaign, making this a decision that requires careful consideration from all parties.

Following Liverpool’s recent 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, Van Dijk said he was “just focusing on the present” when questioned about his future, with nothing new to report regarding contract discussions.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Juventus representative attending the Netherlands fixture was accredited as an assistant to technical director Ricky Massara and sporting director Marco Ottolini. He is also reported to have close connections with Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti.

That level of representation suggests Juventus are doing their homework.

Van Dijk remains a hugely important figure for Liverpool under Andoni Iraola. His experience, authority and understanding of the demands at Anfield continue to make him valuable, regardless of the inevitable questions surrounding age.
