Soccer Player Ratings Explained: Who Decides the Ratings?
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Soccer Player Ratings Explained: Who Decides the Ratings?
  • Overview: Journalist ratings, data ratings, and video game ratings all measure different things. Learn who decides each type, where each one is blind, and how to read them together....

After every big match, player ratings appear everywhere: in newspapers, on apps, and across social media. One outlet gives a striker a 9, another gives him a 6, and fans argue about who is right. Soccer player ratings explained simply comes down to this: different ratings measure different things, and knowing who decides them changes how much weight you should give each one. Some ratings come from journalists watching the game, others from data models counting every touch.

The oldest form of player ratings comes from match reporters. A journalist at the stadium watches the full ninety minutes and scores each player, usually out of ten. These ratings capture things data struggles with: leadership, positioning off the ball, and the feel of a performance. A defender who quietly organises the back line may earn an 8 from a reporter even without a tackle highlight, because the reporter saw the work that kept danger away.

The weakness is subjectivity. Reporters are human, they have deadlines, and they are influenced by the result. A player on the winning team often gets a bump, while a good performance in a losing side can be marked down. Ratings from different newspapers for the same match routinely differ by two points, which tells you they are opinions, not measurements. Treat them as informed impressions rather than verdicts.

Modern rating systems use event data: passes, shots, tackles, dribbles, and duels, weighted by how much each action usually helps a team. Companies that supply this data track every on-ball event in a match, and their models turn thousands of actions into a single score. These ratings are consistent and comparable across leagues, which is why fantasy games and scouting departments love them.

But data ratings have blind spots too. They reward what is countable, so a midfielder who makes simple passes all game can outscore a playmaker who attempts risky through balls that mostly fail but occasionally unlock a defence. Off-the-ball movement, pressing intensity, and tactical discipline are only partly captured. A data rating is best read as “what this player did with the ball,” not “how well this player played.”

Many fans confuse match ratings with video game ratings, but they serve different purposes. Game ratings are set by scouts and editors before a season, based on a player's attributes like pace, shooting, and passing, and they change slowly through updates. They describe a player's general ability, not a single performance. A winger rated 88 in a game can still have a terrible match, and that does not make either number wrong.

Game ratings also shape perception. When fans see a high overall rating, they expect dominance every week, which is unrealistic. Real form fluctuates, injuries matter, and tactical roles change what a player is asked to do. Keep game ratings in their lane: they are a fun summary of reputation and attributes, not a match verdict.

The best approach is triangulation. Read a journalist rating for the human story, check a data rating for the on-ball facts, and watch the highlights yourself for context. When all three agree, you can be confident. When they disagree, the disagreement itself is interesting: it usually means the player did something important that one method misses. A holding midfielder with a low data score but a high journalist score probably controlled the game without the ball.

Also remember the scale. In most systems, 6 is average, not bad, and 7 is good. Fans often treat anything below 7 as a disaster, which flattens real differences. A team full of 6.5s probably played solidly; a team with one 9 and several 5s was carried by one star. Ratings are a starting point for discussion, not the end of it.
