Both Teams to Score Betting Explained: How BTTS Works and Its Risks
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Both Teams to Score Betting Explained: How BTTS Works and Its Risks
  • Overview: BTTS, or both teams to score, is one of soccer's simplest betting markets. Learn how BTTS yes and no settle, when each side makes sense, and why it is riskier than it looks....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by Soccer2026 LiveWire editorial monitoring desk.

Both teams to score, usually shortened to BTTS, asks one simple question: will each team score at least one goal in the match. If you back BTTS yes, you win as soon as both sides have scored, no matter who eventually wins. If you back BTTS no, you win if at least one team fails to score, including in a 0-0 draw. The final result does not matter, only whether both teams found the net.

A 1-1 draw, a 2-1 win and a 3-2 thriller all win for BTTS yes, because both teams scored. A 1-0 win, a 3-0 win and a 0-0 draw all win for BTTS no, because at least one side blanked. The market normally covers 90 minutes plus stoppage time, and goals in extra time or shootouts do not count unless the market states otherwise.

That simplicity is the appeal, but it also hides a trap: BTTS yes can lose in a match full of chances if one team's finishing lets them down, while BTTS no can lose to a single late consolation goal in a game one side dominated. You are not betting on dominance or entertainment, only on whether both defences are breached at least once.

The strongest BTTS candidates usually pair two teams that both score regularly and both concede regularly. Look at each side's scoring record and clean-sheet record separately, because a team that scores in most games but also keeps many clean sheets is a poor BTTS opponent. Home and away splits matter too: some teams score freely at home but go quiet on the road.

Team news can change the picture fast. A missing first-choice striker hurts one side's scoring threat, while a missing centre-back or goalkeeper hurts the other side's clean-sheet chance. Tactics matter as well: a team protecting a lead or playing for a draw is less likely to chase a goal, while a team that must win will usually leave space at the back and give its opponent chances.

Many beginners treat BTTS yes as a safe bet in any game between two attacking teams, but bookmakers price that expectation in. When both teams look likely to score, the odds on yes shorten sharply, so you risk more for less return. Chaining BTTS yes picks into accumulators feels tempting because each leg looks likely, yet every added leg multiplies the chance that one blank ruins the whole ticket.

Variance is the other danger. A team can dominate, hit the woodwork twice and still fail to score, while a team under pressure for 89 minutes can nick a goal from its only attack. That randomness is part of soccer, and no run of form removes it. Never stake money you need, and never increase your stake after a loss to chase it back.

Start with the numbers: both teams' percentage of matches with both teams scoring, their goals scored and conceded per game, and their recent clean sheets. Then check injuries, suspensions and whether either manager is likely to rotate or rest attackers. Finally, ask whether the price reflects what you found, or whether the market already agrees with you.

If both teams score in most of their games and neither keeps many clean sheets, BTTS yes has a logical case, though never a guaranteed one. If one side rarely concedes, BTTS no deserves a look even when the other team scores often. When the numbers are mixed or the team news is uncertain, the disciplined choice is to watch the game and skip the bet.
