  • Primary Signal: Soccer Player Ratings by Position Explained: Why a Defender's 7 Is Not a Striker's 7
  • Overview: Player ratings mean different things by position, because defenders, midfielders and strikers are judged on different actions and responsibilities....

Player ratings look simple: a number out of ten after every match, easy to compare and argue about. Yet a 7 for a centre-back and a 7 for a striker can mean completely different things, because each position is judged on different actions. Understanding how ratings vary by position helps fans read them more fairly and stops misleading comparisons between players with entirely different jobs.

Most published ratings combine statistical data, such as passes, tackles, shots and duels, with subjective judgement from analysts or algorithms. Some systems are purely data-driven, weighting each action by its importance, while others blend data with human observation of positioning, decision-making and influence. No system is perfect, and different providers can rate the same performance differently, which is itself a useful reminder to treat ratings as a guide rather than a verdict.

The key point is that ratings are relative to a position's expectations. A goalkeeper who makes several crucial saves and commands his box well can earn a high rating without touching the ball in attack. A striker who scores but contributes little else may earn a lower rating than a striker who creates chances and presses effectively even without a goal. Context, not just numbers, drives the score.

Defenders are judged heavily on duels won, interceptions, clearances, aerial success and positioning, with mistakes that lead to goals heavily penalised. A centre-back who wins every duel, reads danger early, and passes cleanly out of defence can earn a high rating in a goalless draw, while a full-back who bombs forward but leaves space behind may be marked down despite an assist. Clean sheets help, but they are a team achievement, and ratings try to separate individual contribution from team outcome.

Full-backs face a dual assessment: defensive solidity and attacking contribution. A full-back who defends well but offers nothing going forward may score modestly in a modern system that demands both, while one who creates chances but is repeatedly beaten defensively will also be marked down. The balance between the two roles is what defines a top rating for the position.

Midfielders are rated on passing accuracy, progressive passes, ball recoveries, pressing actions and chance creation, with the balance shifting by role. A holding midfielder who breaks up play and recycles possession efficiently can earn a high rating without a single shot, while an attacking midfielder is expected to create and score. Comparing the two on the same scale without understanding their roles leads to unfair conclusions.

Strikers and wingers are judged most on goals, assists, shots, expected goals and chance creation, but also on pressing, link-up play and movement off the ball. A striker who scores a tap-in after poor overall play may still earn a decent rating, but modern systems increasingly reward the striker who creates space for teammates and presses from the front, even on a goalless day.

To use ratings well, compare players with players in the same position and role, look at ratings over a run of matches rather than a single game, and check the underlying stats behind the number. A defender averaging 7.2 over twenty matches is more meaningful than a single 8.5 in one game. Also remember that ratings cannot capture leadership, communication, or the tactical discipline of holding a shape, all of which coaches value highly.

Ratings are a starting point for discussion, not the end of it. They help fans spot trends, compare like with like, and question their own impressions, but they should always be read alongside watching the match and understanding what each position was asked to do.

Soccer player ratings vary by position because defenders, midfielders and attackers are judged on different actions and expectations. Compare like with like, look at trends over many matches, and use ratings as a guide alongside watching the game, not as a final verdict.
