Liverpool’s forward planning appears to have thrown up another intriguing name, with Paris Brunner now emerging as a player to watch ahead of a future transfer window. The striker, currently with AS Monaco, is highly regarded across Europe and fresh reporting suggests any club hoping to prise him away will face a significant complication from Borussia Dortmund.

According to Patrick Berger, Dortmund retain a powerful mechanism in the discussion. He wrote, “According to Borussia Dortmund, following Sky reports, they hold a matching right for Paris Brunner,” before adding, “Dortmund can therefore theoretically match any offer that comes in for the striker in Monaco, under the same conditions.”

That development matters. Any club, Liverpool included, would need to account for Dortmund’s position before advancing too far. It does not automatically close the door on a deal, but it does alter the landscape and potentially affects price, timing and the player’s own decision-making.

Brunner is still only 20, which makes him an obvious fit for clubs trying to balance immediate depth with longer-term upside. Liverpool have shown repeatedly that they are prepared to invest in players before they hit their peak years, particularly if there is a belief they can be developed into major first-team assets.

There is a practical football reason for that too. Squad building rarely comes in neat cycles, and recruitment teams tend to look beyond short-term form when identifying opportunities. Brunner’s age, potential ceiling and current experience at Monaco place him firmly in that category. He feels more like a strategic signing than an emergency one.

His return of six goals this season also gives substance to the interest. It does not yet mark him out as a finished elite-level striker, but it does indicate a player already contributing while still learning his trade. For clubs in the market for emerging attacking talent, that profile tends to generate serious attention quickly.

Dortmund’s involvement is the key issue here. Matching rights can be a decisive advantage, especially when attached to a young player already familiar to the German club. Even if Liverpool were to present a strong package to Monaco, the possibility of Dortmund stepping in on identical terms creates uncertainty that can influence every part of negotiations.

From Liverpool’s perspective, that means the recruitment staff would need to be convinced Brunner is worth the time and effort of pursuing in a potentially crowded process.
