Liverpool declined to add a new midfield option to the squad during the summer transfer window.

With Curtis Jones leaving for Inter Milan - and Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic also departing - it was speculated that a new midfielder would be arriving.

The club were reported to be active in the chase for Monaco’s Lamine Camara - but by the time the window slammed shut Andoni Iraola was left relying on the same cast of characters in midfield.

With Dominik Szoboszlai failing to recover from an injury problem picked up on international duty in time for Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester City the dearth of options has really been brought into focus.

Beyond the Hungary icon senior midfielders are thin on the ground with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch effectively the only two that Iraola can choose in the engine room.

Owing to a shortage in the position it has been suggested that the 2024/25 Premier League champions would be active in the market come January.

There is a chance that the Reds will compete once again for £47m-rated Senegal international Camara - given Monaco’s precarious financial state.

However a deal is not going to be straightforward because Liverpool have overseen another staggering spend in the summer transfer window.
