Liverpool’s interest in Josh Acheampong looks increasingly unlikely to develop into anything concrete, with TeamTalk reporting that Chelsea are moving to secure the defender on a fresh long-term contract.

The 20-year-old has been on the radar of several clubs, including Liverpool, after an encouraging rise at Stamford Bridge. As reported, there was “significant Premier League interest during the summer, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Bournemouth all making enquiries about his situation.” That level of attention underlines the regard in which Acheampong is held across the game.

Chelsea’s position, however, appears decisive. The report states the club “have no interest in allowing Acheampong to leave and instead want to secure his future with an improved long-term agreement”. For Liverpool, that is the key detail. Interest is one thing, availability is another, and all the signs point towards Chelsea shutting the door early.

Acheampong is already under contract until 2029, though Chelsea are now understood to be exploring an even longer commitment. TeamTalk reports the new arrangement could run “potentially for up to six more seasons and through to 2032.” In practical terms, that would remove any realistic hope of a deal unless the player’s stance changes dramatically.

There is also clear support from within the coaching staff. The report says Xabi Alonso “is understood to be a major admirer of Acheampong and sees him as an important member of his squad going forward.” It adds that he is “viewed as a player capable of having a significant future at Stamford Bridge.”

That backing matters. Acheampong’s ability to operate at centre-back or right-back makes him a valuable squad option, and Chelsea clearly see upside in his versatility. TeamTalk also notes that “his development has also continued to attract attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but Chelsea’s stance is firm: they want to keep him.”

From a Liverpool perspective, the fact enquiries were made is notable in itself. Acheampong fits the broad profile elite clubs often monitor, young, flexible, homegrown and with clear developmental ceiling. Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Napoli are also said to have checked on his situation over the last year, which further reinforces the market interest around him.

Still, this currently looks like a case of admiration rather than opportunity. Chelsea have “already rejected approaches and enquiries for the defender” and are now working to make their position even stronger through a new agreement.
