Rangers manager Derek McInnes faces a difficult January transfer window after chairman Andrew Cavenagh warned against expecting another major recruitment drive at Ibrox.

According to the Daily Record , Cavenagh delivered that message during a meeting with fan representatives on Saturday. The club wants stability following a turbulent first season and a summer that brought 14 new signings.

The chairman’s position creates a significant challenge for McInnes, particularly after injuries disrupted his attacking options. Rangers completed a reported £9 million move for Kevin Kelsy after Lawrence Shankland and Youssef Chermiti suffered injury setbacks.

Chermiti faces a lengthy absence, while Shankland’s recovery could extend into the January window. Consequently, McInnes might have to rely heavily on Kelsy during a crucial period of the domestic campaign.

The Daily Record reported that Rangers would pursue incremental improvements rather than another wholesale squad rebuild. However, the club could enter the market if circumstances force an emergency signing.

Cavenagh remains frustrated by Rangers’ European disappointments, although recent domestic performances have offered encouragement. According to the meeting minutes, he wants the team to concentrate fully on domestic success and approach each match individually.

The ownership group has already invested more than £100 million in Rangers , with further funding expected later this season. However, Cavenagh acknowledged that continually injecting money makes it harder for investors to achieve financial returns.

Technical director Dan Purdy’s impending departure adds another consideration for the football department. Rangers have stressed collective responsibility for recruitment rather than attributing transfer decisions to one individual.
