Borussia Dortmund have confirmed a contract extension for head coach Niko Kovac until the summer of 2029 . The 54-year-old's deal was due to expire at the end of the current season, but the board has decided to firmly back his continued tenure in charge.

After arriving in February 2025, Kovac took charge of a team in crisis sitting in 11th place and guided them to Champions League qualification. Last season, the Croatian coach built on that progress by securing a runner-up finish in the Bundesliga.

Sporting director Lars Ricken highlighted the squad's development and described the extension as a clear message of stability. Kovac also boasts the highest points-per-game average in the club's German league history, with 2.15 points per match.

BVB have made a strong start to the current campaign, winning six of their seven competitive matches. Despite the recent draw against Werder Bremen , the hierarchy at Signal Iduna Park remain fully confident in Kovac's long-term work.

For his part, the coach expressed his satisfaction with the agreement and stressed the importance of maintaining high standards every day. He said the squad's priority is to keep improving each day so they can mount a strong challenge for domestic and international titles.
