There is a certain type of transfer story that refuses to go away at Liverpool, the kind built on old admiration, unfinished business and the nagging sense that the right player arrived at the wrong club at the wrong time. Aurelien Tchouameni fits that description perfectly.

According to Football 365 , Julian Ward is eager to revisit Liverpool’s long-standing interest in the Real Madrid midfielder after returning to a senior recruitment role at Anfield. It makes sense on paper. Tchouameni remains one of the most accomplished holding midfielders in European football, a player of authority, mobility and intelligence, and the sort of footballer any elite side would want at the base of midfield.

The problem, as it so often is with Liverpool transfer news involving world-class talent, lies in the difference between admiration and availability. Ward’s interest is not new. Liverpool wanted Tchouameni in 2022 when he was leaving Monaco, but Real Madrid carried the greater pull and won that race. Since then, the Frenchman has grown in stature in Spain and become embedded in the Madrid setup.

The source report makes plain that Ward still sees Tchouameni as a potential answer to Liverpool’s midfield needs. Pete O’Rourke said: “Yeah, obviously Julian Ward does look like he’s going to be reappointed as the new sporting director at Liverpool. He’s obviously going to have targets in mind and there will be work to do on this Liverpool squad ahead of upcoming transfer windows. As you said, Ward was interest previously in bringing Tchouameni to Anfield, and I’m sure there will be interest going forward because he remains very much on Liverpool’s radar. But it could be a very difficult deal to do in the near future because he only recently signed a new contract at Real until 2031.”

That contract matters. So does Real Madrid’s own internal view of the player. Clubs of that stature do not hand out long extensions to footballers they are preparing to sacrifice, particularly when those players have become trusted figures in the first-team structure.

O’Rourke’s further update sharpens the picture around any possible move. He said: ‘Liverpool will have to part with a huge fee if they are to lure Aurelien Tchouameni away from Real Madrid. The 26-year-old has been a long-term target at Anfield and has been tipped as the answer to their ongoing issues in midfield after what has been a mixed start to the season. However, the France international has established himself as an important part of Jose Mourinho’s plans, and Los Blancos are not prepared to let him go easily in the near future.’

He added: ‘Los Blancos are now reluctant to lose Tchouameni, and despite Liverpool considering a renewed move for his signature, he is considered unlikely to leave the Bernabeu.’

And that, really, is the heart of it. Liverpool can admire, monitor and plan. Ward can revive old ambitions. Yet Real Madrid’s Tchouameni stance feels less like a negotiation and more like a closed door.
