The January transfer window still sits over the horizon, yet the sense of movement is already building around Jules Kounde, Bayern Munich and Tottenham. According to Sport, the German champions are monitoring the Barcelona defender and could be ready to move if they complete a defensive sale first. It is one of those stories that feels distant and immediate all at once, the sort of rumour that can gather force very quickly when circumstance begins to shift.

Kounde is the kind of player elite clubs rarely stop admiring. Reliable, polished, tactically intelligent and flexible enough to operate across the back line, he has long had admirers because he answers several problems at once. Bayern see that. So do others. And from a Tottenham perspective, it is the mention of Premier League interest that sharpens the focus, because when a defender of this level becomes even slightly attainable, clubs with ambition have to pay attention.

The key to this developing situation appears to lie in Munich rather than Barcelona. Bayern are prepared to act if they can move Kim Min-jae on first. The Korean centre back has been made available to find a new club and Sport reports that Bayern value him at €40 million, with the added benefit of removing wages of around €8 million from the bill. At the moment there has been no direct contact between Bayern and Kounde, and no signal from the player that he wants to leave.
