Liverpool are among the clubs keeping a close watch on Nicolás Scotti, the highly rated Defensor Sporting winger whose rise in Uruguay has quickly pushed him onto major European recruitment lists. TeamTalk report that the 16-year-old is firmly on Liverpool’s radar, although any move remains some distance away.

Scotti, born in 2009, is a right-sided attacker who can also play from the opposite flank. He made his senior debut in August and has already collected Primera División minutes, including a late outing in a 1-0 win over Danubio. At international level, he has featured for Uruguay Under-17s and Under-18s, and he was part of the Under-17 group that booked a place at the U17 World Cup.

The broad outline is becoming clearer. “Liverpool are monitoring him”, with the Merseyside club previously described as having “edged ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United” in the race to track his development. Yet that picture is shifting, because the queue is lengthening fast.

According to the report, “In Brazil, São Paulo and Atlético Mineiro have made enquiries. No agreement has been met yet.” More significantly, “sources have added Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain to the list of clubs watching him closely.” That is the sort of heavyweight company that can change the complexion of a deal very quickly.

Scotti’s contract is said to include “a release clause of about $8million (£6m)”. TeamTalk add that Defensor Sporting, a club with a strong record of developing and selling talent, “are understood to be open to a fee below that figure if a formal offer arrives.” From a market perspective, that makes Scotti a fascinating name to follow.

There is, however, an obvious complication for Liverpool and any other Premier League club. “English clubs cannot register an overseas player under 18.” With Scotti not turning 18 until November 2027, the likely route is patience, ongoing monitoring and perhaps groundwork on an agreement for the future rather than an immediate transfer.

This is where the recruitment battle sharpens. The report notes that “the realistic path for a Premier League side is to keep watching, and perhaps agree something in principle, rather than complete a transfer now.” That model has become increasingly common for elite teenage prospects outside Europe, but it carries risk. If Real Madrid or Barcelona decide to act decisively, Liverpool’s position could become difficult very quickly, because “A move to one of the two Spanish giants would also be very hard to ignore for Scotti.”

Scotti also comes with strong football pedigree. His father, Diego Scotti, is a former player, while his uncle, Andrés Scotti, represented Uruguay. That background often matters in how young prospects handle early career decisions, especially when multiple top-level clubs are circling.
