Gerard Martin has gone from arriving at Barcelona from Cornella to becoming an increasingly important part of Hansi Flick’s defence, and the defender has now opened up about the rapid change in his career.

In an extensive interview with SPORT , Martin reflected on his switch from full-back to centre-back, the pressure of playing for Barça , his relationship with Lamine Yamal and his ambitions for the future.

Barcelona’s strong start to the season has also given Martin plenty to feel positive about, although the extended international break is not something he particularly welcomes.

“We have started very well, and now we have to stop for a few days, but we will return with enthusiasm,” he began.

The defender has maintained his place at centre-back after making the position his own last season.

“Yes. Last year I had a great year as a centre-back, and this year I will try to continue to maintain the level.”

Martin’s rise has been remarkably quick. Just a few years ago, he was still playing for Cornella and now he is competing for a place in one of Europe’s biggest teams.
