Chelsea are pushing hard in the market once again, and the latest indication is that Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has emerged as a leading target for January. According to TeamTalk, Chelsea are growing in confidence that a deal can be struck for the England international, even if the price is likely to test the upper limits of their appetite.

This is a move with several layers to it. From Chelsea’s side, there is admiration for Scott’s profile, his versatility in midfield, and his clear upward trajectory after breaking into the England setup. From Bournemouth’s side, there is understandable resistance, not least because selling a key player in the middle of a campaign is rarely ideal. Yet the broad direction of travel appears increasingly clear, with sources indicating that January is becoming a window to watch very closely.

Scott’s development has been monitored for some time, but the timing now feels significant. The 23-year-old has “recently won his first two caps for England”, a milestone that further underlines his status as one of the most highly regarded young midfielders in the country. Although his latest outing was followed by the setback of a thigh injury, “which is expected to sideline the midfielder for up to five weeks”, that has not dimmed Chelsea’s interest.

At Stamford Bridge, the view is that Scott would fit naturally into a squad assembled around youth, technical quality and long-term upside. The report states that Chelsea see him as “a natural fit for a squad that already features some of the Premier League’s most exciting young talent”. That point matters, because recruitment at the top level is often about more than pure ability. It is about profile, age curve, tactical suitability and the environment a player will enter.

The pull factors are obvious. The chance to work under Xabi Alonso, and to share a dressing room with elite young players, is described as important in Chelsea’s thinking. TeamTalk adds that “the combination of Alonso’s tactical approach and a dressing room packed with high-potential teammates is expected to weigh heavily in Chelsea’s favour when the player looks at his many different options.”

Bournemouth’s stance is firm, and there is little sign they intend to blink early. Scott remains under contract until the summer of 2028, which gives the south-coast club leverage, even if there is growing noise around his future. Crucially, the report says he is “so far resisting all calls to sign an extension”, a detail that helps explain why the prospect of a January sale is beginning to gather momentum.

Still, Bournemouth are trying to change that picture. They “have stepped up efforts to agree a new long-term contract and have made clear they do not want to lose Scott midway through the season”, while also urging him to wait until the summer if a departure becomes unavoidable. That is a sensible position, both competitively and financially.

The biggest issue for Chelsea is the valuation. TeamTalk reports that “any deal is expected to cost close to £100m”, which would represent a club-record sale for Bournemouth. Internally, that fee is seen as justified by market precedent and by Scott’s all-round profile. Bournemouth believe his age, top-flight experience, technical quality and recent international recognition all support a figure “at the upper end of the scale”.
