Aston Villa’s decision to sell Emiliano Martinez for just £7.5 million raised eyebrows during the summer transfer window, particularly with Unai Emery preparing his squad for another demanding European campaign. However, the Argentine goalkeeper has now revealed that his departure involved personal reasons, with the disappointment of losing a World Cup final playing a significant part.

Martinez joined Chelsea towards the end of the window after Villa had already secured their new first-choice goalkeeper, Zion Suzuki, from Parma. The 24-year-old arrived for approximately £30 million, with Emery viewing him as an option for both the present and future.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Martinez explained how the defeat in the World Cup final affected him emotionally and influenced his decision to seek a different environment.

“It took a lot out of me after losing a World Cup final; the pain stayed with me for a long time. I needed a fresh start at my club to get over the heartache I felt after that final,” he told ESPN Argentina .

“I come here [international duty] and honestly feel great, happy, full of energy, and that’s what matters most.”

Martinez had attracted interest from Juventus during the transfer window, with the Italian club approaching Villa for a second time. However, Juventus eventually signed former Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario instead, leaving the Argentine with limited options as the deadline approached.

Chelsea eventually completed a £7.5 million deal after Robert Sanchez’s inconsistent performances raised concerns. The transfer offered Martinez a fresh challenge while allowing Villa to continue their goalkeeping transition.

His contribution at Villa Park deserves considerable recognition. Martinez established himself among Europe’s leading goalkeepers and played a major role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph alongside Lionel Messi.
