West Ham United have agreed a short-term loan for a 17-year-old academy goalkeeper, Tommy Goodger, to join Brentwood Town, giving him a chance to experience senior football. The West Ham Way reported the move on September 18, citing ExWHUEmployee.

The Football Association confirms that short-term loans to non-league clubs can operate under separate rules, with registration handled by its player status system. Brentwood will take the goalkeeper into their squad for Saturday’s FA Cup second qualifying round tie at Aveley. It gives him experience right away before returning to Rush Green.

The goalkeeper has made four U18 Premier League appearances and conceded 13 goals, although he has the attitude, maturity and athletic qualities. He joined from Exeter City in January 2025, earned his scholarship later that year and helped the U18s reach consecutive Premier League Cup semi-finals, saving a penalty against Aston Villa . West Ham’s records show he has yet to start for the U21s.

For Goodger, the biggest gain should come from senior football. Youth matches sharpen technique, yet non-league football brings stronger challenges inside the penalty area. A Brentwood spell should test him, because the Blues have endured a league start and lost their match 3-2 against Stanway Rovers.

His 13 goals conceded from four U18 appearances need context. That figure works out at 3.25 per game, but raw totals rarely tell the full story. His penalty save against Aston Villa shows his reflexes and temperament. Injury problems limited his first scholarship season, so consistent senior minutes could matter as much as the level.

Brentwood’s position makes this a test. The club lost 2-1 at Dulwich Hamlet, then 2-3 to Stanway, while Saturday’s FA Cup tie gives Goodger a competitive stage.

There is a trade-off. A goalkeeper here may spend long spells defending a deep block, dealing with direct balls and prioritising survival over polished distribution. For a goalkeeper developing under Nuno Espírito Santo, that can mean less work on West Ham ’s build-up patterns.
