Liverpool are heading towards another significant contract call, this time involving Alisson Becker, with the goalkeeper’s long term future far from settled. Credit for the latest update goes to Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go podcast, where the situation was outlined clearly and without much room for misinterpretation.

The key detail is simple. Alisson remains under contract at Anfield until 2027 after Liverpool triggered the extension clause in his deal, but beyond that there is currently no further option in place. If the club want to keep him beyond that point, fresh terms will be required. Right now, that process does not appear to have started.

Romano explained the background in direct terms: “Alisson is a special situation because for Alisson, Juventus were very interested around April, May, then Liverpool decided to continue with him, also not to lose another leader after Mo Salah, Andy Robertson and all the others who left in the summer transfer window.”

That context matters. Liverpool have already seen major dressing room figures move on in recent windows, and there was little appetite internally to sanction another high profile departure at the same time. Retaining Alisson offered stability, experience and elite quality in one position where disruption can be especially costly.

Romano then added: “So, Liverpool activated the option for an extra season, 2007. Now, if they want to continue together, a new contract is needed.” The reference was clearly to 2027, and that is the deadline now looming into view for Liverpool’s recruitment staff and decision-makers.

There is a wider point here about Liverpool transfer planning. It is one thing to postpone a decision by triggering an option, but that only buys time. It does not remove the issue. In this case, the issue is whether Liverpool can persuade one of world football’s outstanding goalkeepers to commit again, or whether they must begin preparing for life after him.

On the current picture, the warning signs are obvious. Romano said: “There is no option, no extra option in the contract, so let’s see what’s going to happen. At the moment, there are not active conversations between Alisson and Liverpool over a new deal.”

That does not mean an exit is guaranteed, but it does place the situation firmly on the watchlist. Clubs tend to move early when they are certain over a player’s future, especially with someone as important as Alisson. The absence of active talks leaves space for other clubs to monitor developments and for Liverpool to be dragged towards a difficult decision later.
