Julian Ward is taking over as Liverpool’s sporting director in the middle of an important transition period.

The last 18 months have seen the Reds be very active in the transfer market, meaning lots of squad turnover and some big money arrivals.

As a result the coaching staff, led by Andoni Iraola, have struggled to find balance among the first-team and it is clear there is still work to be done on the training ground and in the transfer market.

One of Ward’s first priorities before the winter window opens will be to review the contracts of Liverpool’s current stars, with one starter pushing for a new deal.

Alexis Mac Allister has been a very important figure since his arrival at Anfield in 2023, but the World Cup winner made his disappointment public when he wasn’t offered a new deal this summer.

Having already seen Ryan Gravenberch and then Dominik Szoboszlai extend their deals, Mac Allister felt hurt when no new deal was put on the table for him ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

With the midfielder set to turn 28 before the end of the season the club reportedly do not view an extension as a priority, but a new report has suggested that not all hope is lost for the Argentine.

The report, from Football Insider , states that Mac Allister has been told he must prove he deserves to be offered a new deal at Liverpool.
