Following Niko Kovač’s contract extension until 2029 , Borussia Dortmund will look to secure successive UEFA Champions League victories when they face Bodø/Glimt in Norway on Wednesday night.
Before the late 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen, BVB had won all their league games – including wins in the DFB Pokal against HEBC Hamburg, and Champions League against Villarreal. The strong start to the season has made those around the club optimistic about a successful season, which is backed up by the Croat’s output as head coach.
Under Kovač, BVB’s points per game (2.15), win percentage (66% percent) and clean sheet percentage (42%) is the all-time highest among all Dortmund coaches in Germany’s top flight.
After extending his contract, Kovač stated: “ Together, we have set a clear course for the future and laid important foundations. We want to build on that. We have a clear vision of how we play football, how we perform as a team, and what it takes to achieve our goals. It is crucial that we do not rest on our laurels, but work every day to improve. We see great potential and are convinced that, together, with full conviction and great determination, we can achieve great things.”
On Wednesday Dortmund are expected to welcome back Julian Ryerson for this game. The right-back/wingback was injured during the international break and didn’t feature in the 2-2 draw against Bremen. Additionally, Konstantinos Karetsas, who only played 18 minutes, is also expected to get more minutes in Norway.
Bodø/Glimt have been a revelation in the Champions League in recent years. The side pulled off surprising results in the competition. Last season they managed to beat Atletico Madrid away from home, held BVB to a 2-2 draw, came out 3-1 winners against Manchester City, and also got a draw against Tottenham.
On Matchday 1 this season, they lost 5-0 to Bayern Munich. However, they’re a side that can not be underestimated. The team currently sits second in the Norwegian top division on points, behind leaders Viking.
It is expected to be a challenging contest for BVB but Kovač’s side will be expected to win.
