Real Madrid lost the first Madrid derby of the season, going down 2-1 to Atletico Madrid at the RiyadhAir Metropolitano. Goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David won the match for the hosts, with Antonio Rudiger scoring a consolation for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Had it not been for Courtois, Real Madrid would have been on the end of a mauling. He could do little about the two Atleti goals, but he made a number of top saves to stop the hosts from scoring four or five.

Dumfries offered very little in attack, but in defence, it was arguably his best performance in a Real Madrid shirt. He nullified the dangerous Alex Baena very well, and Mourinho will hope that he can build on this, despite the disappointment of the derby defeat.

Konate had a tough afternoon. He was not as solid as usual in defence, and he was poor with the ball at his feet – although he did make a goal-saving clearance to stop a third goal going in.

Huijsen had been one of Real Madrid’s better players up until he blew the match away with a poor moment. He cynically brought down Giuliano Simeone inside the penalty area, and given that he was the last man and he did not try to play the ball, it was inevitable that he would be sent off.

Cucurella had his worst performance in a Real Madrid jersey. He was regularly beaten by Giuliano, providing little security in defence. He will hope to put this behind him quickly.

Real Madrid had absolutely no control in the centre of the park, as they allowed Atleti to control proceedings throughout. Valverde tried his best, but he was way off it.

Like Valverde, he tried to make a difference, but he was very lacking. It’s clear that the two of them are not a good pairing at this stage.
